CHAPTER 21
Harriet felt a little upset. Or maybe a lot. All she knew was that she felt tricked somehow. That life had played a mean trick on her and now she was suffering the consequences. And as she walked away from Scarlettâs apartment she wondered where she was going. The fervor of her fury had propelled her out of that pet flap and down from the balcony to street level, but that initial burst of rage had presently expended itself and she had no idea what to do next.
As she turned a corner, she suddenly bumped into a lone figure who stood smoking a cigarette and leaning against a lamppost. The man was accompanied by a large dog that looked positively frightening. It was one of those dogs that liked to chew up smaller animals just for fun. But as she recoiled, the dog spoke.
âExcuse me, miss, but are you from around here, by any chance?â
âI am,â she said cautiously, reluctant to go anywhere near the ferocious beast.
âOh, thatâs such a relief,â said the big dog. âIâve been trying to get in touch with someone, you see, but I donât know my way around this place. Iâm not from around here, but then I guess you can probably tell.â He smiled an embarrassed smile. âMy name is Boris, by the way, and this is my human Bruno.â
âBruno? Your humanâs name is Bruno?â
âThatâs right. Bruno Watts. Why? Do you know him?â
âNot really,â she said, studying the human figure. He looked a little rough around the edges, she thought, and his appearance was unkempt. Almost as if he hadnât washed or changed his clothes in days. He was wearing a khaki shirt that had holes in it, and his jeans had also seen better days.
The dog had followed her look, and now said, âI have to apologize for the state he is in. He had a pretty nasty shock, you see, so he hasnât been himself lately.â
âDoes Bruno have a daughter, by any chance?â asked Harriet.
The dogâs face lit up. âHow did you know?â
âOh, just a lucky guess.â
âItâs the daughter Iâm looking for, you see,â Boris continued. âHer name is Ella, and I have this awful feeling something really bad happened to her.â
âAnd why would you think that?â
âWell, Bruno was supposed to meet her, you see. They had arranged a time and a place, but when he arrived there, the girl was a no-show. Bruno waited around for a while, but finally he left, figuring she had changed her mind. But the strange thing is that she hasnât answered his texts, even though before they would text all the time.â
âWhat do you think happened, Boris?â she asked.
âI have absolutely no idea, and neither does Bruno. The only thing I can think is that Ellaâs mother found out and stopped Ella from meeting her dad. They are divorced, you see, and they donât get along well, the father and the mother.â
âSo you were there when Bruno went to meet his daughter?â
âI was there,â Boris confirmed.
